After a 6 week backpacking trip across SE Asia after graduating, I realized that the chronic stomach aches I had experienced growing up were not actually normal! As I traveled to remote destinations, I was eating fresh, local, natural foods and was not having the same debilitating stomach issues I was used to. I learned that it was the Standard American Diet full of processed foods that was to blame. I had been to the doctors countless times and never once had been asked about my diet.... AHHH!
I began navigating my new diet of natural, whole foods in a society full of take away and convenience foods. I was working a 9-5 with a 2-3 hour commute each day....and HATED IT! I woke up, went to work, came home, slept and repeated this each day. I felt stuck, uninspired and depressed.
I was jealous of people who spoke so passionately about things...especially their jobs. Was there really nothing I felt passionate about? Something had to change.
I knew this is not how I wanted to live but everyone would just tell me that, "this is what life is"...and "no one likes their jobs". So I accepted this and continued on the hamster wheel.
Like most people I wanted to tone up a bit and knew I should be getting some exercise so I joined a free local run group that met up once a week. It sucked. I remember running a couple of kilometres and felt like I was going to die. I hated it but....I went again...and again. It probably took me about 6 months before I actually started to look forward to the weekly meet ups. I once again found myself in aw of how much of an impact my nutrition was having on me-this time for performance. Soon I got stronger, could run longer and found myself completing my first 5km, 10km, then half marathon! More importantly, I felt my confidence improve and fell in love with the runners high! I soon found myself signed up for the Natural Nutrition Program at the Canadian School of Natural Nutrition.
I found a job closer to home that would pay the bills while I finished my schooling. Once done, I decided to combine my love for fitness and nutrition and became a personal trainer as well as a nutritionist. I eventually started my own business and now get to do super cool things like running across Costa Rica and teaching women how to love their lives again!
I have to admit that leaving my 9-5 job to venture out on my own was VERY scary for me, but all good things in life worth doing can be scary...so here we are! If you are hungry for more out of life then take care of your health first. Yes-you may lose weight and build muscle, but you will discover more about yourself and a confidence you never knew you had! And it is with that, that you will truly discover who you were meant to be!
